Cornerstone Book Drive and Holiday Shop

Every year for the holidays, Cornerstone hosts a Holiday Shop for the families that utilize their services. Cornerstone is a non-profit agency that serves adults and children who have been impacted by domestic violence, sexual violence and/or human trafficking. Stocked with goodies, the Holiday Shop gives kids from abusive homes the opportunity to shop for gifts for their parents and siblings. They get to experience the joy of giving by picking out and wrapping presents for their family.

What’s different about this event versus something like Toys for Tots is that the kids aren’t necessarily getting a gift; they are learning the value and the joy that comes with giving. In the event that there is more than one child in a family, then each child would likely receive a gift from the other sibling(s).  Cornerstone does a great job setting up the space to feel like a store, and they create a nice atmosphere for families to celebrate the holiday.  Each child from birth to 18 years old that comes through the Holiday Shop to pick out a gift for their family members will get a book from Santa; it’s the one gift they are given at the event. Each year, Brooklyn Center employees are the only group that donates new books for this event, which has been greatly appreciated by all of the children.
